Safety and side effects

Is a hair transplant safe? Side effects explained

A hair transplant is a minor surgical procedure done under local anaesthesia. Most side effects are mild and short-lived. Knowing what is normal, and what to ask a clinic, removes most of the fear that dramatic videos online create.

What is normal in the first weeks

EffectWhat to expect
Mild discomfortUsually managed with medicines your doctor prescribes
Swelling of the foreheadCan appear for a few days and settles by itself
Small crustsForm where grafts are placed and fall off within 7 to 10 days
RednessFades over the following weeks
Temporary sheddingTransplanted hairs often shed before new growth begins around month 3
Numbness or tinglingCan occur in the treated areas and usually settles over time

Rarer problems, and how they are reduced

  • Infection: reduced by sterile technique and aftercare instructions.
  • Visible donor scarring: HST uses fine micro-instruments and takes only part of each follicle, designed for minimal scarring.*
  • Over-harvested donor area: HST leaves the stem cells behind, so the donor area is designed to grow back.*
  • An unnatural result: reduced by careful hairline design and placing each graft at the hair’s natural angle.

How HST is designed with safety in mind

  • Local anaesthesia, and home the same day
  • Fine micro-instruments, designed for minimal tissue disruption
  • Grafts kept in a patented growth medium before placement
  • A medical review and, where needed, blood tests before any procedure

Questions to ask any clinic

  • Who will do each part of the procedure?
  • What anaesthesia is used, and how is pain managed afterwards?
  • What aftercare and follow-up are included?
  • Who do I call if something worries me after I go home?

Yes. Transplanted hairs often shed in the first weeks. New growth usually begins around month 3.

How long until I can return to work?+

Most patients return to normal activities within 3 to 5 days.
