The donor area

The donor area in a hair transplant

The donor area is the back and sides of the head, where hair is usually resistant to pattern hair loss. Grafts are taken from here, so how it is treated decides both how the back of your head looks and what is possible later.

How the donor area usually heals after FUE

Everyone heals differently. If anything worries you, ask your clinic or send photos for a review.

WhenWhat is common
First daysRedness and small scabs where follicles were removed
Around 7 to 10 daysCrusts fall off and redness starts to fade
Around 1 monthShort regrowth around the extraction sites; some people notice temporary shedding (donor shock loss)
3 to 6 monthsTemporary shedding usually recovers and the area evens out
After 6 to 12 monthsThin or see-through patches that remain are worth a review

Signs of an over-harvested donor area

  • See-through patches at the back and sides with short hair
  • A moth-eaten, uneven look
  • Visible white dot scars
  • Too little donor hair left for a future session

How HST treats the donor area differently

Standard FUE removes whole follicles, so every graft taken is gone from the donor area for good. HST takes only part of each follicle and leaves the stem cells behind, so the donor area is designed to grow back. That matters if you may need more than one session.*

Worried about your donor area?

Send photos of the back and both sides of your head, with your hair short, on WhatsApp. A doctor reviews them and explains what can be done.

Questions people ask

The back and sides of the head, where grafts are taken from. Hair there is usually resistant to pattern hair loss.

Is shedding in the donor area normal?+

Some people notice temporary shedding around the donor area in the first weeks, often called donor shock loss. It usually recovers over the following months.
